How to clean a kettle with Vinegar

Limescale is a hard chalky mineral that will form inside your kettle if you don’t clean it regularly. Therefore, descaling your kettle often is a very important thing to do!

Every day over 159 million Americans are consuming a cup of tea. Surveys show that 1 in 10 people never clean their kettle. That is a lot of uncleaned kettles!

Don’t worry cleaning your kettle is pretty easy and can be done quickly using household items you probably already have in your kitchen.

Things you will need:

Lucy’s distilled white vinegar

Best distilled white vinegar for cleaning your Moka pot
  • Bottle of distilled white vinegar
  • A dishwashing brush
  • (optional) Lemons
  • A clean dry towel

Here is a short guide on how to clean your kettle using Vinegar. This process is also known as “descaling”. It will remove all the limescale within your kettle.

Total Time: 20 minutes

  1. Clean your kettle with mild dishwashing detergent

    Clean your kettle with hot water and a mild dishwashing detergent. Use a dishwashing brush or sponge to also clean the bottom of the kettle.

    Note: Don’t put your kettle in a dishwasher. This can cause oxidation and corrosion, also known as rust. Hard brushes will cause scratches, this also causes rust and may shorten the life of your kettle.

  2. Fill the kettle with ½ water and ½ Vinegar

    Fill the kettle for about 3 quarters with Water and Vinegar. Use about ½ of water and ½ of white distilled Vinegar.

  3. Let the Vinegar stand for about 30 minutes

    Let the Vinegar stand for about 30 minutes. This will ensure that all the limescale will loosen up and becomes easy to remove.

  4. Scrub your kettle using a sponge or dishwashing brush

    Thoroughly scrub the inside of your kettle using a sponge or dishwashing brush. Make sure you remove all the build-up limescale.

  5. Optional: add lemon water to remove all limescale

    To remove all the limescale inside your kettle you can use water and lemons. fill your kettle with warm water and add about 4 lemons cut into pieces. Let the mixture stand for a couple of hours and you will get the best results.

Now that your kettle is clean you can enjoy a delicious, mineral-free cup of tea again. In order to keep your kettle clean, you should repeat these steps about once every month.
